The Servant May 2016

Pastor's Letter - May 2016

You may remember for a few months at the beginning of this year, I included prayer calendars to encourage us to pray for one another, to pray for local churches, to pray for social ministry organizations, to pray for leaders and volunteers of this congregation. Maybe it was because of studying the gospel of Luke or maybe it was because of some divine inspiration that I felt that it is important this year to focus our attention on prayer.

Jesus prays frequently in the gospel of Luke. If you read the book of Acts, the believers pray frequently throughout that story as well. The cool thing is, both of these books of the Bible contain stories of God at work in amazing ways. Prayer and God at work…could there be a connection? There absolutely is! Prayer was an important part of Jesus’ ministry and the ministry of the early church. This was not easy work, so God’s guidance and strength was necessary for anything to unfold. It is through prayer that we communicate with God, and that God through the Holy Spirit communicates with us.

Prayer can take many forms. It can be a formal prayer spoken in the morning, at mealtimes, before bed or in worship. It can be an informal conversation you have with God in the car, at work or when you are walking. Prayer can be quiet time, or it can be a worship service of song, Scripture and silence. It can incorporate movement or activity, like the prayer stations we had the Wednesday of Holy Week. Prayer can be a quieting of our own hearts and minds, an intercession on behalf of someone else, a request for the Spirit’s guidance, petitions of thanksgiving and praise, or a confession and request for forgiveness.

Prayer can take many forms and can have many purposes, but there is one thing about prayer that is not negotiable: Prayer is a necessary part of our life of faith. It is a practice for communicating with God. It is a practice for caring for friends, neighbors and strangers. It is way of commending our lives, our ministry and this world into God’s care. It keeps us in tune to the fact that God is listening and leading, desiring to be called upon and invited into our lives. Prayer can change things; it can change us.

The prayer calendars invited us to pray for particular people and organizations on our own. But now I’d like to invite you to come and pray together. There is no lack of topics and people in need of prayer. So join me for prayer on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm in May. Each week will have a topic for our prayers:

May 4: The mission of the Church and our relationships with other faiths
May 12: Those who are suffering or struggling
May 19: Children and youth
May 26: For those who are working (i.e. our leaders, police, teachers, etc)

Everyone is welcome to join me for prayer around these topics each Wednesday evening in May. We will meet in the sanctuary or the prayer garden, depending on the weather. I look forward to praying with you!

Grace and peace,
Pastor Becky

The rite of Affirmation of Baptism will be celebrated for our second year Confirmation student on Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 6:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church in Youngstown. Lunch with The Confirmation Kids!

The Confirmation students and their sponsors got together for a fun lunch on April 10th. It was nice to be able to talk and laugh about all sorts of things. It was decided that we all need to get together more often. With that being said, we would like to have a game afternoon/night at the church in the very near future. Thank you to Kay Welch and Bev Baker for preparing the lunch. It was yummy!

Confirmation Students and their sponsors respectively are:

Just a reminder that as a Lord of Life member, if you have been hospitalized, for at least an over-night, to call Pastor Becky or the office to make them aware of your hospital stay. Our outreach ministry has a program called Meals-to-the-Sick, coordinated by Kay Welch, which arranges for a meal to be delivered to your home. We encourage you to take advantage of this on-going ministry.

Knitting & Quilting Group - 2nd & 4th Thursdays

The Knitters & LWR Quilting Group meets at Lord of Life from 12:30 to 2:30p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month.

Can you sew a seam on a sewing machine? Can you tie a knot? Can you cut a square of material? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then YOU qualify to quilt! Are Thursdays inconvenient for you? Would you rather participate from home? No problem! You can still be part of the quilters at Lord of Life.

Call the church (330-533-3531) to let us know you're interested.

Connection Center

Located in the fellowship space on the coffee table is a wicker holder with blank cards in it. Please feel free to use these to offer greetings to people you would like to thank or who you haven’t seen in a while or who are ill to wish them well and let them know you are thinking about them. We plan to keep the holder stocked with cards. If you have any cards that you would like to leave, bring them in and put on the table. This is a great way to stay in touch with YOUR church family.

Beyond our doors

The Mahoning Valley Lutheran Cluster announces the Ascension Worship will take place at Christ Lutheran Church, 250 Sexton St., Struthers, OH. at 7:00 PM on May 5th. Please join us.

A message from Church Council

Rather than wait until late in the year, council decided to keep you informed of our fiscal status at the end of each quarter. The objective of the status report is to avoid any major year-end financial issues by drawing attention to them on a quarterly basis.

Council thanks everyone for supporting the ministries of Lord of Life through your offerings. Your giving is very important for the financial health of the church and our ministries.

For the first quarter, we have a short-fall regarding our budget. Our building fund is in reasonably decent shape with an expected deficit of approximately $92.00 for the quarter. However, our general fund income is running well short of meeting expenses, with a deficit of $5,332.00 for the quarter. On the other hand, our expenses for the quarter are very close to what was budgeted for.

If we all work together we can make up this deficit by year-end and start next year off with a clean financial slate.

Grace and Peace,
Woody Gingery, Council president
On behalf of Church Council and Pastor Becky

Personal Care Kits

Imagine that you have lost your home and everything in it in a flood or tornado - and that all around your neighbors’ homes are destroyed, too. Imagine not having a way to comb your hair or clean your teeth - or soap or a towel or nail file to clean yourself or repair your nails after scratching your way through the remains of your home in the hope of finding something that can be saved.

Then imagine being handed a kit containing the most basic needs for personal care.

Now imagine yourself being the who gave the items for that hope-renewing, potentially even life saving kit. You can be that person - during May at Lord of Life. Look for the basket in the narthex and take a copy of the list of items needed (also listed below). The kits will be distributed by Lutheran World Relief; a crucial ministry of the Northeast Ohio Synod and the ELCA. Thank you very much!

Personal Care Kits
- One hand towel, dark color recommended
- One wash cloth, dark color recommended
- One bath size bar of soap, any brand, in its original packaging
- One adult size toothbrush in its original packaging
- One comb, wide tooth preferred, remove packaging
- One metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging
- Six Band-Aids (or similar brand), preferably ½” to ¾”, secure together

Lawn Mowers Needed

It’s that time again! Lawn mowing season! There are three ways you can help! A sign up sheet is available in the narthex. You can sign to serve on a weekly rotating schedule or sign to mow once or twice during the season or you can donate money for gas and upkeep of the mowers.

You are invited!

When: Wednesday Evenings at 6:30 during May.

Everyone is welcome to join me for prayer around these topics each Wednesday evening in May.

May 4: The mission of the Church and our relationships with other faiths
