The Servant February 2016
The Servant - February 2016
PASTOR'S LETTER, February 2016
“…we confess to you and to one another, and before the whole company of heaven, that we have sinned by our fault, by our own fault, by our own most grievous fault…†Greetings!
In about a week, we begin the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday observance. The words above are found in the Confession of Sin for Ash Wednesday worship. That moment, after the Confession, when we receive the ashes on our foreheads is probably one of the most poignant reminders that we are frail, imperfect creatures who cannot save ourselves. This sets the stage for the season of Lent, which tends to be a penitential time of self reflection, prayer and giving but, in the early church, was the time of preparation for baptism at Easter. We’ll be doing a little of both this year, and I invite you to join us!
At 7 pm on the Wednesdays in Lent, we will gather for Evening Prayer, a service of prayers, songs, Scripture and a message. The theme will be Continuing In the Covenant of Baptism and will give you the chance to renew your own understanding of what difference your baptism makes in your life today. A different preacher will be with you each week, but I will be with you to kick things off on Wednesday February 17th.
At the end of the weeks of Lent and this time of baptismal renewal, you and the people of the other local Lutheran churches are invited to affirm your baptism at our Easter Vigil worship on Saturday March 26th at 7 pm. More information about that service will appear in the March newsletter.
I invite you into a meaningful time of reflection and examination. Our great need…God’s great mercy… the gift of baptism…God’s calling on our lives.
Grace and peace,
Women’s Spirituality Retreat
Just when we need it, in the middle of winter, Camp Mowana offers a few days away from daily responsibilities and pressures.
In the comfortable Adult Retreat Center, surrounded by peaceful woods, women of the faith share in bible study, prayer and fellowship. Each woman chooses for herself what she needs and finds most helpful, whether it be quiet time alone, participation in the program, or wonderful conversations.
This year’s retreat will be February 5 -7 (Friday evening thru Sunday morning). We will carpool from the church. For details contact Vangie McDorman (330-726-8020).
Ladies, do consider giving yourself this time, close to God and other Lutheran women.

Beyond Our Doors
Lenten Collection for Oesterlen
Our Synod and National ELCA are involved in many ministries we don’t hear much about. Our congregations benevolence offerings to Synod and ELCA are one way we at Lord of Life contribute. Sometimes we can help in more direct, visual ways.
A unique and important ministry of our Synod is Oesterlen Services for Youth in Springfield, OH. Oesterlen serves troubled children and teens both in their own homes and in residence on Oesterlen’s Campus. Care and therapeutic counseling are given by highly skilled professionals. They help young victims of some of our society’s darkest ills: substance abuse, physical and emotional abuse, exploitation and more.
A way we can help is to gather items that all kids need - a full list is in the narthex at the Oesterlen display. Pick up a copy and donate a few things in the basket.
Later in the year, you will be invited to go along when the items are delivered and to see Oesterlen yourself. Thank you!

Summer Staff Needed
Every summer we seek out college aged students to help serve our youth camps at LMC & Mowana. This year we are excited to provide opportunities for dozens of students, but we need your help finding them. If you know someone who is a strong leader, demonstrates maturity and discipline, while serving God, consider sending them our way to help lead the next generation at camp this summer.

Take If You Choose
Unclaimed poinsettas from Christmas are avaialable. Please take one.
Unclaimed serving dishes, left at the church, are available (these dishes have been noted in various bulletins and Servant editions with no one coming to claim them).
For your convenience, all of the above items have been placed on a table in the fellowship hall.
Located in the fellowship space on the coffee table is a wicker holder with blank cards in it. Please feel free to use these to offer greetings to people you would like to thank or who you haven’t seen in a while or who are ill to wish them well and let them know you are thinking about them. We plan to keep the holder stocked with cards. If you have any cards that you would like to leave, bring them in and put on the table. This is a great way to stay in touch with YOUR church family.
Updating Our Photo Wall
We would like to update our photo wall in the fellowship hall. We have several empty slots and would like to fill them. Please take a look and see if we are missing your smiling face. If you have a current picture you would like to use please drop it off at the church office. Thank you.

January 9, 2016
To all the Lord of Life Family,
There have been so many prayers offered up for healing in my name. I thank you for them. My knee is doing so much better—the stitches are out and the stiffness is lessening. God answers prayers.
Thank you for the loan of the super-duper walker. It was so helpful (and my little dog enjoyed riding on the seat!) I am working hard on recovery of depression. I ask for your continued prayers as I pray for all of you.
Yours in Christ,
Dear Aleah and Gabe,
Thank you for the wall clock for my Sunday School room. I really appreciate it!
Love, Mr. Drotleff
P.S. Gabe, are you trying to tell me something? Ha Ha!
Dear Lord of Life,
Thank you for the gift and for thinking of me at Christmas.
At the January Red Cross Blood Drive, we had 38 people sign in to donate blood. Thank you to the following people that helped:
Our cookie bakers were Bernadette Allen, Jayne Boucherle and Norma Pignanelli. Margaret Fieger made Jello and Betty Dysert made soup. Betty also worked the registration desk while Jim Duffett and Chuck Dysert worked in the Canteen.
Thank you to all who helped with decorating and undecorating the Sanctuary for Christmas.
Decorating:Ron Fekety, Larry Cohol, John and SHeila Massie, Art and Norma Thomas, Vangie McDorman, Tom Drotleff, Judy Camp, Pastor Becky, and Dan Balint.
Undecorating:The Fekety Family, Norma and Joe Pignanelli, Ruth Allen, The West Family, Mary Ann Frank, Vangie McDorman, Tom and Barb Drotleff, Rick and Carol Kershner, Chuck and Betty Dysert.
A special thank you to Mary Lou Drotleff who provided lunch (her famous Sloppy Joes) for the undecorating crew.
A very special thank you to Norma and Art Thomas for all the hard work in organizing and pulling this off year after year and making our sanctuary beautiful each Christmas.
Look for more thank yous on the bulletin boards in the fellowship space!
