Pastor's Letter - Sept 2015
Well, my new house is finally settled enough to have people over! Robert and I hosted the choir for their annual picnic at the end of August, and we hope to be able to host other groups from the church in the near future.
But I want to say a big thank you to the choir, Tim and Pastor Lang Collins. On the night of the picnic, Pastor Collins and the choir did a house blessing for us, and Tim wrote a song specifically for house blessings in honor of the occasion. This gift meant so much to Robert and me; we cannot express our gratitude enough. It was a really moving and memorable experience.
It was important to us that we have our house blessed. It helps us to remember that God is always here, and that our home is a gift that God gives us to share love and laughter and life with all who come. We are really happy with our house, but we realize it is not just for our enjoyment but a place to welcome others, to talk about and share food and faith, life and love.
I have done a few house blessings in the past six years. But I wanted to make you aware that house blessings can be a very meaningful experience. I’ve done house blessings for people when they moved to a new place, for people who feel a strange energy or presence in the house and for a person who had a break-in.
The house blessing provides a tangible reminder to us that God is in our homes. We ask that God set our home apart to be a place of peace and love and hope and welcome. You can have a house blessing whether you’ve just moved in or have lived there for years. If this sounds like something you would like to do for your home, don’t hesitate to call and set up at time with me or if you have questions, feel free to ask.
Grace and peace,

Due to the change in worship time, Sunday school for all children from preschool to sixth grade will be held before worship from 9:30 am-10:00 am. For Sundays following Rally Day, adult faith formation will occur after worship, when scheduled.

YOUNGSTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (YNDC) -- VARIOUS DATES!
- Volunteer opportunity throughout the week of September 7 to cut and paint boards to be used to board up abandoned homes. This requires the layout of boards to specific opening dimensions, the use of a power circular saw, and painting of the boards. The layout requires a little geometry. Cutting requires a firm steady hand. Painting requires no skill and little strength.
- Volunteer opportunity late in the same week to stage the cut and painted boards at houses throughout the community to be applied on the following weekend. This requires moderate strength.
- Volunteer opportunity on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12 to go out to cut brush and trees away from abandoned homes that will be or have been boarded up. This requires moderate strength to drag the brush to the curb or toss into a dump truck; the use of a chain saw or other equipment. If you have a chain saw, please volunteer!
- Volunteer opportunity on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 to go out to apply the pre-cut and pre-staged boards to abandoned homes. This requires moderate strength to handle and place the pre-cut boards; the use of a power nailer to apply the boards (this is a lot of fun!).
To volunteer for any YNDC opportunities, call Pr. Duane Jesse at Zion Lutheran Church @ 330-792-4046

Letters From Liberia
While they served as Lutheran (U.L.C.A.) missionaries in Liberia, Vangie McDorman’s parents wrote letters to their families about their experiences. Vangie’s compilation of those letters will soon be a completed book.
Board of Worship
“Praise God from whom all blessings flowâ€â€¦ the first line from a hymn that certainly speaks to us. We are truly blessed to be able to gather for worship here each Sunday. We are fortunate to have members willing to give of themselves as worship participants: acolytes, crucifers, lectors, worship assistants, ushers, greeters, presenters, altar guild, and musicians to enhance our service.
As we begin our new worship schedule, remember if you cannot serve on the assigned date and time please call someone to replace you, then let Carole, our church secretary, know of the change.
If anyone is interested in serving in any of our areas of participation, please let Pastor or Judy Camp know. We will train you and give any help needed: acolyte (this can also be adults), crucifer, lector, worship assistant, usher, greeter, presenter; choir—see Tim, altar guild---see Norma Thomas.
As we come back from our summer vacations, I am looking forward to making together a “joyful noise unto the Lordâ€.
